"In 1640 the Town of Greenwich was settled and Elizabeth Fones Winthrup purchased what is now known as Greenwich Point and much of the surrounding area currently, Old Greenwich).  Back then this area was know as ‘Elizabeth’s Neck’ in recognition of the original owner. The Town of Greenwich was declared a township by the General Assembly in Hartford, Connecticut, on May 11, 1665."
